As a trading company, we do not own large-scale production facilities and therefore operate in a business model with a relatively low risk of involvement in serious pollution-type environmental impacts.
Nevertheless, waste is generated through office activities as well as logistics and distribution operations, and we are working to reduce waste and pollution arising from our own operations.
In addition, our business activities involve handling more than 5% of Japan’s recovered paper raw materials, thereby contributing to the promotion of a recycling-oriented society and the reduction of environmental impact on society.
Furthermore, in order to reduce marine plastic waste through broad cross-industry collaboration, we participate in initiatives such as the Clean Ocean Material Alliance and Plastic Smart, and actively promote the wider adoption of environmentally responsible products.
While we place strong emphasis on reducing pollution, waste, and the use of resources, this fundamental approach is clearly reflected in our Environmental Policy, Waste Management Policy, and the basic policies outlined below.

Waste Management Policy

We consider the reduction of waste and the creation of a resource-recycling society to be important issues, and we will work to reduce waste, promote the effective use of resources, and properly dispose of waste. In addition, we will comply with the relevant laws and regulations of each country and make continuous improvements to protect the environment. This policy applies to all KPP Group companies and promotes waste management in collaboration with partner companies throughout the value chain.

Metrics and Targets

With the aim of reducing waste generation and resource use, we have set a target to achieve a year‑on‑year reuse rate of at least 100% compared with the previous fiscal year.
Kokusai Pulp & Paper has also set a target to increase its share of recovered paper collection volumes in Japan, with a goal of reaching 15.0% by fiscal year 2027.

・NOx and SOx Emissions (Past Three Years)
The emissions of NOx and SOx resulting from the use of 13 company-owned trucks operated by KPP Logistics (KPPL), which is responsible for our logistics operations, are shown below.
With regard to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Kokusai Pulp & Paper (non-consolidated) is within the scope of reporting; however, no VOC emissions have been identified during the past three years.

・Verification of Environment‑related Data
In fiscal year 2025, we plan to conduct third‑party verification of the global Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions results for fiscal year 2024. The verification body will be SOCOTEC.
With regard to the management of environmental performance, we have established and implemented an Environmental Management System (ISO 14001). The percentage of sites certified to ISO 14001 was 100% for Kokusai Pulp & Paper (non‑consolidated) and 20% globally, based on fiscal year 2024 results.

Initiatives

At Kokusai Pulp & Paper (non‑consolidated), the objectives of our Environmental Management System (EMS) include reducing the volume of waste generated and the use of resources by increasing the range of items recycled. In addition to recycling copy paper and PET bottles, we are promoting the recycling of waste generated by our own operations.
Furthermore, in order to facilitate an early transition to a recycling-oriented society, we are also engaged in businesses that promote the recycling of paper, cardboard, PET bottles, and other materials.
Exhaust emissions from company vehicles and trucks used for sales activities and deliveries may have an impact on the environment. In addition, water discharged through office activities is also recognized as a potential source of environmental impact. From this perspective, we are implementing the following initiatives with the aim of reducing pollution.

Results

Musashino Shigyo

Reduce air pollutant emissions by progressively increasing the use of low‑emission vehicles and alternative fuels.

100% of diesel forklifts used on‑site operate on GTL (gas‑to‑liquids) fuel as an alternative to conventional diesel.

KPP Group Holdings, Kokusai Pulp & Paper (Headquarters Building)

Continuously implement appropriate treatment of water discharged from office activities and ensure full compliance with water quality standards.

Periodic cleaning of wastewater traps and proper disposal of sludge as industrial waste.

Kokusai Pulp & Paper

To help reduce marine pollution caused by microplastics, set the annual budget for expanding sales of environmentally responsible products—including products that contribute to plastic reduction and elimination—at JPY 6.0 billion (FY2024).

Actual results amounted to JPY 4.32 billion, falling short of the FY2024 budget target of JPY 6.0 billion. Efforts are currently focused on expanding sales of OJO+ Paper Turf, a paper‑based artificial turf made from paper yarn, which is also exhibited at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. The product has been adopted by municipalities and other customers, with a growing track record of installations.

Target market share of 15.0% in domestic recovered paper collection (FY2027).

6.5%(FY2022)
6.5%(FY2023)
6.8%(FY2024)

Reduce waste volumes and resource consumption by increasing the range of recyclable items.

Recycling of paper cups was initiated in 2022, followed by the launch of recycling for paper towels used in‑house starting in 2025.
